Now Providing Fleet Maintenance for Irvine's Bike-Share Program with Drop Mobility

By Jon David Tok · OC Mobile Bike Mechanic

A New Kind of Client: An Entire Fleet

Most of this blog is about one bike in one driveway. This post is about a few hundred.

OC Mobile Bike Mechanic is now providing maintenance and repair support for the City of Irvine's bike-share program, operated by Drop Mobility. It's the largest ongoing account we've taken on, and it's a natural extension of the fleet maintenance work we already do for apartment communities, HOAs, and corporate campuses across Orange County.

What Fleet Maintenance Actually Looks Like

Shared bikes get ridden hard, by a lot of different people, with none of the babying a personal bike usually gets. That means the failure points are predictable but constant:

  • Brakes and cables that stretch and wear faster with heavy daily use
  • Tires and tubes — flats are the single most common fleet issue
  • Drivetrain wear — chains and cassettes on a shared fleet see far more total miles than any one rider would put on their own bike
  • General safety checks to keep bikes street-legal and rider-ready

The goal for a program like Irvine's is simple: keep as many bikes in rotation and rideable as possible, with as little downtime as possible, so riders always have a working bike available when they open the app.

Why This Matters for Riders

If you've used Drop Mobility bikes around Irvine, this is the part that affects you directly — fewer broken bikes sitting idle, faster turnaround when something does need fixing, and a mobile mechanic who can service bikes wherever they end up, rather than requiring them to be trucked back to a central shop.

Built on the Same Approach We Use for Every Customer

This isn't a different business — it's the same mobile-first model we use for individual customers, just scaled up. Come to the bike, fix it on the spot when possible, keep things simple.
