Teaching Cub Scouts Bike Safety at Back Bay's Bears on Bikes Day

By Jon David Tok · OC Mobile Bike Mechanic

A Different Kind of Service Call

Most of what shows up on this blog is one bike, one driveway. This one was different — a Cub Scout Bear den (third-grade boys) asked me to run a bike safety and pre-ride inspection station before their group ride through the Back Bay in Newport. We met at the Muth Center on Sunday, September 20th, and set up shop right there in the parking lot before rolling out.

What We Covered in 30-40 Minutes

The den leader asked for something simple and memorable — a checklist the boys could actually carry with them, not a lecture. So instead of doing every repair myself, I walked each Scout through inspecting his own bike, station by station:

  • Tire pressure and how to use a pump — squeeze test first, then confirming with a floor pump
  • Brakes and safe stopping — squeeze both levers, check for good bite before rolling out
  • Chain, pedals, handlebars, and wheels — spin the wheel, wiggle the bars, check nothing's loose
  • Saddle height and basic bike fit — a quick adjustment makes a huge difference in control for a kid-sized rider
  • Helmet fit — snug, level, and buckled, every time
  • Hand signals and trail safety — the basics every rider needs before joining a group ride

Bikes on the Stand

A handful of bikes needed more than a quick check. I brought the full setup — stand, tools, pump — and got a few Woom, Trek, and Cannondale kids' bikes dialed in: seat height, brake adjustments, and a couple of loose bolts caught before they became a problem mid-ride. For anything bigger, the plan was always to flag it and let the parents know rather than do a full repair on the spot — the goal of the day was teaching the boys to spot issues themselves, not just fixing everything for them.

Out on the Trail

Once the den rolled out, the safety station didn't really stop — we regrouped a couple more times along the Back Bay trail for quick checks before continuing on.

Then, the Ride

Once every bike passed inspection and every helmet was buckled, the den — with a solid crew of dads helping manage the group — headed out for a short, easy, adult-supervised ride through the Back Bay. Great weather, great group, and a fun reminder of why teaching kids to actually check their own bikes matters just as much as fixing them.
