OC Has Better Trails Than You Think
Living in Lake Forest, I'm spoiled. Within 20 minutes I can be on some of the best singletrack in Southern California. Here's my honest guide to the best rides nearby.
Aliso & Wood Canyons Wilderness Park
Distance from Lake Forest: 15 min
Best for: All levels, especially beginners and intermediate riders
This is your gateway drug to OC mountain biking. Over 30 miles of trails, fire roads, and singletrack weaving through the canyons of Laguna Beach.
- Wood Canyon Trail — gentle, scenic canyon floor ride. Perfect for families.
- Cholla Trail — steep but short climb with panoramic views of the coast.
- Lynx Trail — technical singletrack that rewards experienced riders.
Pro tip: Go early on weekdays. Weekend afternoons get crowded with hikers and dogs.
Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park
Distance from Lake Forest: 10 min — literally in our backyard
Best for: Intermediate to advanced
Whiting Ranch is famous for Raptor Ridge, a punishing climb that puts you on top of the world with views all the way to Catalina on clear days. The descent back through the canyon is pure joy.
- Mustard Road → Raptor Ridge → Red Rock Canyon is the classic loop
- Watch for loose shale on the descent — it catches people out
Santiago Oaks & Irvine Regional Park
Distance from Lake Forest: 25 min
Best for: Mellower rides, family rides
More flowing and forgiving than Whiting or Aliso. Great for getting a new rider comfortable or just spinning easy legs on a recovery day.
Keep Your Bike Trail-Ready
Before any ride, do a quick check: squeeze both brakes, shift through the gears, give the wheels a spin. Five seconds that can save your day.
Need a pre-ride tune-up? I'll come to your house, apartment, or even meet you at the trailhead parking lot before your ride.
