E-Bikes Are Not Magic — They Still Need Maintenance
I've seen a real shift in Orange County over the last two years. E-bikes are everywhere — on trails, bike paths, in driveways of every neighborhood from Irvine to San Clemente. And I love working on them.
But there's a myth that electric bikes are maintenance-free because "the motor does the work." They still have chains, brakes, tires, cables, and bearings — all of which wear out. The motor just means they wear out faster because people ride them harder and longer.
The Drivetrain Takes a Beating
Motor-assisted pedaling creates significantly more torque on the chain and cassette than regular riding. Most e-bike manufacturers recommend chain replacement every 1,000–1,500 miles — roughly half the interval of a non-motorized bike.
Signs your e-bike chain is due:
- Skipping under power
- Chain stretch (use a chain checker tool — ask me for a free check)
- Visible wear on cassette teeth
Battery Care Matters More Than You Think
Your battery is the most expensive part of the bike. A few habits extend its life significantly:
- Don't store it fully charged — ideal long-term storage is around 50-60% charge
- Don't let it run to zero regularly — partial charges are fine and actually better
- Keep it out of extreme heat — don't leave your e-bike in a hot car
Motor and Display Connections
Dirt and vibration can work loose the connectors on your motor and display over time. A quick check of connections during a tune-up can prevent frustrating mid-ride cutouts.
Brakes Are Critical on E-Bikes
The extra weight (typically 45-65 lbs for most e-bikes) means you need more stopping power. Hydraulic disc brakes are non-negotiable on e-bikes — mechanical disc brakes are marginal. If your e-bike came with mechanical discs, consider an upgrade.
Have your brake pads checked every 500–750 miles, more if you ride hilly terrain like we have here in South OC.
